When I was told that I had two hearts, I laughed. At the time, I was concerned about something else entirely. My mother said she had found out when her doctor told her at my birth. She assured me she had no intention of giving me one of the hearts for some nefarious reason, it was a medical fact.

She even found a picture online of a woman with two hearts and joked that the rumor must be true if it was in a magazine article. Our conversation went on to other topics. Years later I realized that this is a common misconception about people with congenital heart defects.

People often think that people with this condition have two hearts, one of which is dedicated to destruction and the other for good. This idea comes from the notion that the heart only pumps blood through the body, but not all of it goes to the rest of the body. In reality, everyone has one heart but there are still two pumps in a person’s chest cavity.
